I have Mononucleosis, can I still excercise regularly?

I've had the symptoms of Mono before when I was younger, and now that I have them again, it put me in a higher risk of rupture in my liver or spleen. The doctor said not to participate in any sports at least until January so that the high levels in my liver can go back down to normal. But what about excercise? I didn't ask him about that and I just started wondering now. I excercise regularly each day - if not, the weekend. But now I'm not sure whether to continue or not...and I'm a health freak when it comes to physical fitness. Would anyone have any suggestions on how to stay active without exerting myself too much?

Part of the symptomatology of Infectious Mononucleosis is profound fatigue. Most patients with mono don't have the energy to exercise - and with good reason. The fatigue they feel is due to the presence of certain immune system products - tumor necrosis factor and interferons - that attack the virus and try to rid the body of the disease.
I suggest to my patients who have severe mono-type syndromes to not exercise or work out, as this will reduce their immunity during the active phase of the disease, and make secondary infections more likely.
Mono also causes the spleen to enlarge - it is a very fragile organ normally, but in its normal size, it is well-protected under the rib cage. When it enlarges, the tip extends down below the ribs, and it is subject to trauma there, and it can rupture - an often catastrophic complication that may require emergency surgery .
My suggestion to you is to not exercise until you can get hold of your personal physician who knows your case, and let him or her advise you based upon first-hand knowledge of your situation. Rest, lots of fluids, and exercise your finger on that remote or the computer mouse!
