Dangerous Moles?

I have a few moles, particularily one on my breast that are giving me concern. I remember reading an article a long time ago telling about the different types of moles (regular & irregular shapes, darkness, etc) but I don't remember exactly. I'm only 19 but I used to go tanning alot. Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for or refer me to a website that can help. I am planning on seeing a doctor anyways but I would like to know a little more now.

Things to look for:

Asymetric-- roundish moles are fine.. any mole that is an odd shape or growing "arms and legs" is of concern.

Borders: normal moles usually have sharp, clear edges. any moles that borders look "fuzzy" is of concern

Color: an even color througout. Brown to black but even. A mole that is brown on one side, and black on the other is something to have checked. Any mole that has a pale (loss of skin color around it ) should really be checked-- this is called a Halo Nevus and is worrisome.

Size-- smaller than a pencil eraser is normal, larger needs to be checked.

Stable size-- enlarging moles are always something to look for.

Appearance-- this is difficult to explain-- Look at ALL your moles ( average person has 75-100 of them). compare all of them ! the odd ones that look "different" will stand out in your mind.

Try the American Academy of Dermatology web site. I am sure that they have guidelines and pics to compare. If not- e-mail me off list and I will send you some literature from the office.

It isn't unusual for a mole to grow or change shape somewhat especially since you are young, still growing and certainly your breasts still are. However, sudden changes in size shape or color are all reasons for concern. In addition, you know that your history of tanning is a risk factor. Do not delay in having a professional examine every one that concerns you. Websites might give you an idea of what to look for but nothing will help you more than having an MD check you out.
