Question about mold and Asthma?

I have mold "in" the shower wall. When I moved into my house the shower was digusting and covered in mold. My landlords fix to this problem was to clue a new shower wall to the old one... Wala ploblem fixed right??? NO
6 months later the mold between the two walls is really bad and now the bath tub is acctualy falling out. So the land lord decided he is going to rip the whole bathroom out and replace it. Sorry this is so long winded....
So my biggest question is, My 4 year old has Asthma... Lately its been getting worse. Is the bathroom mold affecting her?
Is there a place in california to contact and have them come out and test the mold to see if it is in fact makeing her sick? I've tried reaserching it and cant find anything!
My other question is, when they start ripping the bathroom out I know the mold spores are going to go everywere. How do I keep her safe?

Very sorry that this was so long.... For anyone who took the time to read the whole thing....THANK YOU!

Mold can definitely trigger asthma and allergies. I have had problems with it in the past. Putting a new shower wall in over the old one was just a band aid effect in my opinion. If there is mold in the walls, the whole thing needs to come out and be replaced.

My recommendation is to definitely not be home while this is being done if at all possible. If you have somewhere else you can stay that would be the best option. If that is not feasible, try to keep the bathroom door closed as much as you can. Also, when you return home or when the work is completed, pull out the vacuum and clean everything thoroughly. You may want to consider not leaving your daughter's toys out in the open while the work is being done. Either put them in plastic rubbermaid-type bins or plastic bags or whatever.
Same for anything you eat out of such as dishes, drinking glasses, and silverware.

If dampness is contributing to the mold problem, you may want to ask if an exhaust fan can be installed in your bathroom. You may also want to check into a dehumidifier and a hepa filter for your apartment. If that isn't an option, you will most likely need to keep a bathroom window open when you or anyone in your household is showering or bathing to let out the steam and excess moisture.

I think you really need to be careful here. I heard of a house in the USA that had to be demolished because of a mold problem that was making the occupants ill. Asthma can be affected by dust but I'd consult your doctor and consider moving if possible. Sorry, I don't mean to scare you but it's better to be informed and educated about this sort of thing early than when it's too late.

Without a doubt, mold can worsen asthma. There also is little doubt that it will get worse when the old bathroom is ripped out. You can call anyone you like, but that isn't going to change anything for your daughter. For her, the best bet would probably be to move. Try looking for the Housing Department in your area. They might be able to lead you to resources and information. You may also be able to withhold rent as the mold creates a health risk and therefore breeches the warranty of habitability.

Sure mold can affect asthma..when the bathroom is being ripped out hang a damp sheet in the doorway..kinda' seal the doorway with it..should catch the spores, at least the majority of them...and get your daughter out of the place while it is being done,,,maybe stay at a friends for a couple of days...

I lost a house to Stacciboteris Mold in South Texas. My son had asthma. He got terribly sick. We all developed asthma like symptoms. We started having trouble with our memory. It's bad stuff! Call the Heath Department. They should be able to guide you in the right direction. If the bathroom is the only place in the house with mold, put up plastic sheeting in the doorway while they're repairing it. Bleach will also help kill it.

I don't think mold is good for anyone but I have heard that it can make asthma worse I would move. It is actually illegal to rent out a house with mold like that my friend had the same problem and she took the landlord to court and won you might go through the city landlords have certain rules and there are inspectors in the health department. I don't think a new bathroom will help as I am sure it is worse but you just can't see it. Withholding rent is good just make sure you get some pictures to prove how bad it is if they put up a new one and your evidence is not detectable then you will NOT win in court also doctors bills and other problems from the mold health inspector should be called asap.

On a side note I had really bad respiratory problems like asthma and chronic bronchitis and basically could only breath at half capacity or one lung. I started playing the flute or any instrument and all my problems went away in a year or two because I was basically exercising my lungs and they got stronger. This is also good for learning as it makes kids smarter as well, so I would recommend it for your daughter.
