Anyone have Mitral Valve Prolapse?

I was diagnosed with Mitral Valve Prolapse yesterday. I have not had a Ecocardiogram but have had ekg and the doc said he heard the Clicking noise. I am very very nervous about this. What is the prognosis for this? I have read it is no big deal. But all day and for the past few days my chest has been so "heavy" and it has been hard to breath. I am currently on 2 types of blood pressure meds to keep my blood pressure down. I just feel like i cant do anything without runing out of breath. Any Personal experience would be greatly appreciated. I am ONLY 27 and freaking out!

I was diagnosed with MVP years ago & trust me, it's nothing to get all upset about. The prognosis for MVP is that you learn to live with it, & go on with your life, just as I have. Surgery is rarely ever done, so try to calm down & don't hyperventilate. Your chest is heavy & you're out of breath, because you're worried & nervous about having been diagnosed with MVP. Focus on the good things in your life & learn to live with MVP. Ask your doctor how often you need to get the ECG & get it done. I was advised to take anitbiotics, prescribed by my doctor, before oral, vaginal, or abdominal surgeries, as it kills the bacteria before in case it travels to the heart. I had foot surgery in 2002, & I had to take antibiotics before that surgery also, just as a precautionary measure. There's no need for you to freak out. Many people have MVP & they're just fine.

no.

I have it and it's not so bad. The medicines will make you really tired for a while until your body adjusts. But don't give up. The only thing to remember is this: When having surgery AND getting routine dental work, you must first take a high dose of antibiotic to prevent any kind of particles lodging on that defective heart valve. Other than that, drink 1 oz of h20 for every degree it is outside and no more caffeine, chocolate or sugar. Good luck!!! Oh yeah, cardio (exercise) is a must!!!!

My father and sister have this....I believe that the only thing that has ever been said to them is that they have to take antibiotics before having dental work done. But their's is a mild case.

Neither one of them have any of the issues that you describe. I would think that the short of breath and heaviness are being caused from something else. Mitral Valve Prolapse usually causes chest pain and rapid heartbeat (or pounding). There are meds used for more severe cases...

I would make another appt with your cadiologist and have some more tests run. The shortness of breath and heaviness can be anything from asthma, allergies to pending heart attack. And it certainly can't hurt to get your blood pressure checked while you're at it. My father has high blood pressure and he complains about all kinds of crazy things when it rises.

And try NOT to freak out...it's not good for your blood pressure.
