Mitral valve prolapse w/ trace regurg one more time?

I have mvp with trace regur. Can you lead normal lives with this doc said nothing to worrry about no meds needed just kinda scared because i see some people who have to get valve replacements? Do i need to change any lifestyles? food exercise? Can I live to be old with this or will my life be cut shorter?

mitral valve prolapse is the most common heart valve lesion, and is especially found in young, adult females. people with MVP (even with trace regurgitation) can lead normal lives. I have friends who have them and they lead normal lives. one of them just feels occasional palpitations after exertion, but thats about it. You dont need to take medications, and you dont need a heart valve replacement, unless you are feeling bad, and in that case, just visit your doctor. people with MVP do not have to change lifestyles (although for anyone, a healthy lifestyle is a must), and also with MVP, you will have a normal life expectancy.
hope i was able to help :-)

Amy-
Sorry, this answer is so long... but I am living this FULLY.
1st off, it your primary care doctor who is saying "don't worry about it." or have you consulted a cardiologist? BIG difference.
I have had valve replacement and now also have a pacemaker / defibulator- so, I know a little about the subject- actually, way more than I ever wanted to.
The cardiologist do this test to measure the pressure in your heart. Heart catheterization- they thread this tiny wire into your heart- you're sedated and it's not really invasive. They call the measurement "ejection fraction"- the higher, the better. 100 being no problem. Mine is 18.
The whole thing with any health issue is your ATTITUDE! You choice to live a "normal" life is entirely up to you. Don't let them steal your joy. I know where my limits are when I hit them. Then I sleep.
The obvious things that are hard on your heart- heavy lifting, stress, extreme physical activities... these should be avoided or limited.
The best thing you can do is be gentle with yourself and keep the drama out.
Take supplements like C, E, B complex, CoQ10, Folic Acid and consider what you are putting into your body. I use to be a salt-aholic- baaaad. You still need some salt. Eat banana, tomatoes, garlic, V-8 juice (NOT the low sodium-yucko) rocks and is better for you than Gatorade.
It's all about balance.
I would not be answering this question at all if I was not way tight with God. He listens to your questions- even when you cry or even scream; and He does answer you if you be still and listen for His answers.
I don't make any decisions without consulting Him first. The world can convince you can die any second, but there is something amazingly powerful being hooked up with THE Creator of the Universe. If you haven't already; I would suggest you introduce yourself. He'll welcome you in and embrace you. No matter what your facing seems to dull in His presence.
Personally, I have "far exceeced all expectations" (quote from a- not MY cardiologist who only knows about me.)
You will live as long a life as is written for you. What you do with it and how you live it is your choice. Don't dwell on the diagnosis- don't let it define who you are.
I don't have heart problems, I have issues and I intend to be around a long time. Make the choice to thrive- regardless of what the "professionals" say. They do NOT know everything.
God Bless. Love you!

Valve replacements are done, in most cases, for valves that have stiffened to the point where the blood cannot pass through the chambers of the heart. In MVP, the reason the valve is called prolapsed is because the little structures that hold it in place are too loose, so the valve flops around. Since it does not close properly, a litlte bit of blood is going to go back into the atrium and cause a murmur. That is how most MVP is found in the first place. The backflow of blood is regurgitation. Have you had an echocardiogram?
The doctor is right. I have had an MVP for almost 30 years and the only time I have a problem is if I overdo caffeine or nicotine. Anxiety will also cause it to act up, as will anything that raises your heart rate. The faster your heart goes, the more likely you are to have palpitations. So take it ease on smoking, coffee, tea, sodas with caffeine and even chocolate (it has stimulants too). You will be fine.
