How serious is a mini stroke? what happens to you?

Somebody i really care about has apparently had a 'mini stroke' and i'm really worried.

So does anyone know what one exactly is and how it's different to a full stroke?I know it's something to do with her high blood pressure and stress(she's only in her 20's) but will there be any long term damage to her brain? What will she have gone through?
My grandad had a full stroke and was paralysed down one side for the rest of his life so i'm dereadfully worried for her but i don't really understand what a mini stroke is. Any info would be appreciated.
I won't be able to see her for a week( i'm 17 so can't leave school and don't have any transport) and when i do i don't want to ask too many questions about it because i want to cheer her up not remind her.

Sorry to hear she is having such problems at a young age. She will need a good friend like you who cares about her so. There is porbably an underlying cause for the TIA - so again be there for her. I hope the information below is helpful.

What is Transient Ischemic Attack?

A transient ischemic attack (TIA) is a transient stroke that lasts only a few minutes. It occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is briefly interrupted. TIA symptoms, which usually occur suddenly, are similar to those of stroke but do not last as long. Most symptoms of a TIA disappear within an hour, although they may persist for up to 24 hours. Symptoms can include: numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, especially on one side of the body; confusion or difficulty in talking or understanding speech; trouble seeing in one or both eyes; and difficulty with walking, dizziness, or loss of balance and coordination.

A TIA (mono- stroke) Tranienct Ischemic Attack

TIAs are often warning signs that a person is at risk for a more serious and debilitating stroke. About one-third of those who have a TIA will have an acute stroke some time in the future. Many strokes can be prevented by heeding the warning signs of TIAs and treating underlying risk factors. The most important treatable factors linked to TIAs and stroke are high blood pressure, cigarette smoking, heart disease, carotid artery disease, diabetes, and heavy use of alcohol. Medical help is available to reduce and eliminate these factors. Lifestyle changes such as eating a balanced diet, maintaining healthy weight, exercising, and enrolling in smoking and alcohol cessation programs can also reduce these factors.

alot of time when doctor use the term mini stroke, it is a reversible or transient type of stroke. meaning that there is usually no residual paralysis or numbness. however mini strokes area warning signs for possible further strokes
