1 year old with milk allergy although he's had normal formula for whole life?

When I swtiched my son from formula to vitamin D milk he broke out in a rash and was super crabby. (he didn't have any wheezing or swelling) But I still went ahead and switch him to soy milk. I'm just wondering how he could have an allergy to milk when he's been drinking regular Enfamil formula for his whole life. (It has milk in it)
Or should I be looking for something else that could be giving him the rash? Although, I can't think of anything else that he hasn't had before that he's had recently

To see pictures of the rash click the links below (it's 2 pics that I uploaded to my photobucket)

The only way to develop an allergy is to be exposed to the allergen. So, it is possible to have had milk-based formula and still be allergic to milk.

I'd have to disagree that your child would also be allergic to soy milk. Soy milk does not have lactose or milk protein in it (casein), so should be an option for you. Also, some people (myself included) have found that although they couldn't drink cow milk, they can drink goat milk. That may be another option.

Could something else be causing the rash? It's possible, but since it has happened in close proximity to introducing whole milk, it's pretty suspicious.

there is something in the milk that isnt in the formula. my daughter was the same way the dr. put her on soy. and or goats milk. it helped her, yes it looks like an alergy.

A lot of people are allergic to preservatives and other food additives, you need to compare contents. When you stop and think about it no other species feeds it's young on milk of another, which is why babies, to be in best health, need human milk, that's the bottom line.

Any baby with a true milk allergy will also have an allergy to soy milk as it still has the product that they are allergic to. I wonder if it has anything to do with the milk, or if it was just a coincidence that it happened at the same time. I would go to the doc and have some tests done to see if it is an allergy or something else, you can also get some antiheistamines that should lessen it, just make sure you tell them its for a 1yr old.

It's not uncommon to develop an allergy in the course of a lifetime, and food allergies rare probably the most common of allergic sensitization---with me it was just any kind of exposure to horses, but I digress. Also, your son MAY have started out allergic to milk (or lactose intolerant, which is something slightly different) and just didn't react so much to it because it was dilluted in something else. My little brother was like this.

With any possible allergic reaction get treated by a dr. You want to prevent a worse outbreak. Remember that formula is different than actual dairy--different enzymes.
Usually infants that have a reaction to regular milk it's because of the protein in it. Some infants can be allergic to milk and eat other dairy like cheese, butter, etc.http://pediatrics.about.com/od/weeklyque...
Talk to your pediatrician to prevent a worse reaction

from the looks of the rash ill tell you to take your son to see a skin specialist and try to figure out what it just might be that he is allergic too. always get more that one doctors advice. sorry i cant help you more than that but I've never been in that kind of situation to give you the advice that you need. hope you find out what it is you need to know and the sooner you do the better and much cuter your son would be.he's beautiful congratulations. good luck
