Are migraine meds worth it if I don't have insurance?

I get a migraine 1-2x/week. I am also very sensitive to all medications and I know migraine meds can cause nausea/vomiting, headache, dizziness, etc. I don't want to take a drug if the side effects are going to be the same or worse than an actual migraine. Anybody with experience in migraine Rxs?

Magnesium often helps. There is plenty of magnesium in nuts and seeds and there is also a bit in bread and cereals. There is also quite a bit in soy products. A magnesium supplement could also help.

You can find further information in a search for migraines + magnesium.

I had migraines for years and years and no meds helped them. What helped was laying in bed in a dark room with no noise or smells like food cooking. I would take a couple of gravol pills to help with the nausea and it also helped me go to sleep. Sleep is the only thing that would get rid of the migraine. Next time you have a migraine instead of meds that have those side effects and are expensive without insurance try the gravol and just lay down and see if that helps. As I said, that is the only thing that worked for me.

Be sure to go to a neurologist they specialize in this. My daughter has them all the time and has to stay in bed, away from light and noises. I think most of hers is stress. The medications are mostly trial and error until they find they right one for you or combination. Dr's. offices are usually full of samples and when you go take a small bag and load up on the ones he wants you to have, and if they don't work, call or e-mail and let him know they don't work and you need something else and you need samples because of financial situation, I am in the same boat. I have to see one because of seizures and it was trial and error for quite awhile. Good luck, if I can help more let me know.
Also look it all up on Internet and get info, you can also get medicine through the companies that make them and the Dr. can help and they won't cost anything. Can you get help through the state as medicaid to help with Drs. and medicine===

I had migraines for many years..there are meds that DO help!! There is one called Meclizine~~tis an OTC drug often promoted for motion sickness{nausea and vomiting..etc.} and vertigo, Meclizine is effective in inhibiting the symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and dizziness~~ Meclizine may be effective in relieving vertigo experienced as a result of inner ear infections or other conditions related to dizziness.
For me, Excedrin often worked great if used at the onset of my migraine~~All in combination with laying in comfort: a dark, quiet and odorless room!!
If you're talking about the newer Rx drugs such as Imitrex, etc...I also am extremely sensitive to many medications..I tried a few..NEVER AGAIN!! Then there are Migraine Preventative Rx's, taken daily...some are effective but then you need a complete work-up done by a Neurologist..or if your GP is comfortable doing so, then after all necessary testing is done to make sure you are having actual Migraines and they're not caused by another condition{also an EXCELLENT idea}, your Dr. may begin trying the preventative meds..some do work~~ an inexpensive drug called Propanolol, Approved by the FDA for Migraine prevention is just one of many used~~So, Excedrin and Meclizine might work for your migraines, best taken the moment you feel it coming on!! And also ..try sleeping it off? Try Melatonin, tis a naturally occurring Hormonal chemical in our bodies, often used by travelers trying to get used to different time zones, shift workers, those with insomnia, etc. another herbal remedy is Valerian Root Extract..a wonderful herb for many uses depending on the amount used. Try going to an Herbal/Vitamin/Supplement Store, such as GNC, etc. and ask for help in selecting proper items there...with drug sensitivity..that may be your best bet!!!!
My BEST to YOU...hugs~herbs~health~hope & happiness

Hardly.
Pl try cold water bath and observe, if pain increases use warm.
If you have cough/cold body hot water bath will help.
Pl try simple acupressure given below for immediate relief.
If it fails you will have to go for Acupuncture.

There is hardly any medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for RA, OA, Back ache and almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.

Acidity, WORRY, sadness, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation; drug side effects, stress, bad smell, TV & COMPUTER SOMETIMES, Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy, BODY CONSTITUTION etc are their causes.
None of them can be treated with medicine.
Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.

Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.

Pain killers don't treat the pain but we loose the sense of pain for some time; in that duration our body itself treats sometime and credit goes to meds.
The useless drugs have tremendous power of side effects like liver/kidney failures, ulcer, inflammation of intestines and lot more.

Avoid late sleeping if possible; worry, tension, spicy foods, sour fruits, stale bakery foods, SMOKING and alcohole.

Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help if cough is not there.

But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it is very strong.

If it is acute pl search a painful point (with round tipped pen/jimmy) 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

For forehead/eye pain the points are in front of nails on the finger tips or 3-7 mm below.

It may disappear naturally too.
