Methadone therapy and asthma?

I have had an opiate addiction for many years now. I finally decided to try methadone maintenence therapy to get off of it. I have since been on it for over 2 years now. However, the whole time I have been on the methadone I have had severe breathing problems that were not there before. It has been pure torture for me. Has anyone had the same or similar experience with methadone? I am an asthmatic by the way. I understand that people with breathing difficulties should NOT go on methadone therapy because methadone does suppress the breathing. ????

I think the two things your are experiencing are completely seperate.. opiate overdoses can cause respiratory supression but it would not cauise breathing problems. You may be exeriencing a worstening of your asmtha... completely different process happening

I'm not in agreement with this being the best answer to my question. But it is a good answer. Thank you. Report It

You need to see a doctor.

You might want to read the part about asthma near the bottom of this page:

If you've been on methadone for two years, you might want to consider getting off of it. Drugs have never been known to do anyone any good. If you still have the addictive personality, you need to address that. Therapy does work, if you let it.

You need to tell your doc. about your worsening asthma, maybe he can adjust your meds for the asthma. Please keep on course with the methadone treatment, sounds like you have come a long way, buy you don't need to suffer with the breathing issues, be honest with your asthma doc. Are you taking Advair or one of the newer drugs in addition to your albuterol?

This is for asthma.
