I gained weight - Dr. thinks diabetes - Advice please?

A year ago I quit smoking - I gained 5lbs in the first 5 mths after quiting. 7 mths ago I had my tubes untied and since then I've gained 20lbs. I never eat more than 1000 calories a day, and less than 20 carbs a day. I workout on the elliptical for 30 minutes every day. No matter what I do I just can't seem to loose the 25lbs. I called my doctor today to discuss options to help boost my metabolism. I was shocked to hear that he wants to see me cause he thinks I may have diabetes. Does this make sense to anyone? I was thinking that quiting smoking, or that I turned 31 five mths ago (or a combination of both) might be the reason for the weight gain.

FYI -- I don't eat any junk food, I only drink coffee (w/splenda), tea (w/splenda) and water, I don't eat bread, pasta, rice, potatoes or sweets of any kind, the only fruits I eat are strawberries and blueberries (in moderation). I only eat raw vegetables, grilled chicken, grilled seafood and cheese (1oz a day).
Additional Details

I should add that even with the weight gain I am technically not over weight - well maybe 5 lbs, but still considered thin. My waist is 28" - so obesity metabolic syndrome doesn't seem to fit. However, my father and grandmother (his mother) both have type 2 diabetes, but they are both over weight and carry a lot of fat in the stomach. My husband has type 1 diabetes so I have checked my sugar with his monitor before and my sugar has never been high - it has been 72 before, but I don't think that is low enough to cause concern.

Go to the Dr. and get a A1C test, this will tell him what your blood sugar has been for the past three months.
You're right it's not diabetes, type two can be regulated with diet and exercise, both of which you do.

Could be thyroid problems, anemia, hormone imbalance. Eating only 1000 calories a day and skipping all carbs isn't healthy, and it doesn't look like you're getting enough protein, which burns fat/builds muscles..

From what your describing, I really dont think that you have diabetes. Your doctor just wants you to go in so, cause of liability of answering questions over the phone. It does not hurt for you to go in and have a check up and blood work, just to have the ease of mind.
