Does anyone have a child with a "metabolic disorder"? If so, what diet do you follow?

My daughter is 17 months old and weighs 17 pounds. Her pediatrician diagnosed her with a metabolic disorder and referred us to a genetics doctor and Dietitian. We have not been able to get in with the genetics doctor yet so I am not sure what type of metabolic disorder she has. My question is what should I feed her until I can get into see the Dietitian? Her pediatrician said he had no answer for me! I know, what a quack! Thanks for the help!

get a second opinion. a professional opinion

Start buying your foods from an organic or natural market first of all, as it may be a sensitivity to chemicals, hormones or pesticides in food also. Avoid common allergen foods like milk, nuts, seafood, wheat, etc.
Baked apples or pears are good, as is rice, chicken, rice milk, oatmeal, bananas, squash, mild veggies like carrots and peas,... all organic of course.
Get her to another doctor as soon as possible for another opinion since you don't trust this "quack". Take her to a pediatric endocrinologist.

First, please disregard what the first person said as I thing they misunderstood what you are talking about. Metabolic disorders are not the same things as allergies.
Metabolic disorders are thought about when your child "fails to thrive". At 17 months: your child is 17 pounds, and that is
at less than the 3rd percentile for weight. There can be many reasons for failure to thrive including heart conditions and such, but the metabolic disorders are discovered by running blood tests to look for specific molecules in the blood. For example if A + B = C with the help of enzyme X you and I would have normal levels of C. But with a metabolic disorder, the person might have no, or little C and plenty of A and B. In some cases, A and/or B might be toxic in high enough quantities. Without knowing exactly which metabolic disorder she has, it is tough to say what to feed her.
There are hundreds (there are more than 1300) of metabolic disorders. Some, very common like lactose intolerance, others (most) very rare. Some physicians will never see a case in their careers. Here is my advice to you. Your best bet is to go to the hospital/clinic that is associated with your state's medical school. They are likely to have more specialists than you can imagine, and will be able to answer these questions for you accurately.

If you can tell me the lab results, I might be able to give you some more information, but that is up to you.

my daughter weighed 17 lbs until she was almost 2 1/2 i swear people thought we never fed her but she ate well and entered gradeschool the smallest weight in her class . today at 19 yrs old she weighs more then me and doing fine she actually didnt catch up on the weight untill last year and this year she passed me entering into a size 4-6 and healthy in college
If you cab go to a major teaching hospital. thats where we took her when she was an infant and needed a biobsy I did'nt trust our local drs with her at that point. Same thing when she swallowed the penney at 11mths back to a major teaching hospital again. try that to put your mind more at ease it did mine. Good luck andi
