Can the mercury contained in vaccines be detected in tests?

My son has autism. I've heard that the mercury in vaccines can be one of the causes of autism. Is this a myth? His blood tests came back negative for mercury, but I'm still not satisfied. I've heard that it takes forever to flush it out of the body once detected. I've also heard that there's no such thing as mercury in vaccines?! Can it or can it not be detected in a blood test or any other kind of test?
