How much mercury does one have to have in their system to cause cancer?

When I was really little, my mom vacuumed up the mercury beads from a broken thermometer in her bathroom. The bathroom was carpeted, so it's possible there was still mercury on the floor even after all the visible mercury was cleaned up...not to mention she probably got the worst of the vapors from having to kneel over and suck it all up.

Several years later, she passed away to brain cancer.

Could the two events be related?

On a side note, the mercury spill was almost twenty years ago. Is it possible that there is still a significant amount of contamination on that portion of the bathroom floor?

Probably the two events are not related. The intoxication with mercury has an acute faze that can be life threatening and if your mother didn't experience that, she probably got a little dose.
I believe the bathroom floor is safe and clean and you shouldn't worry about that.
