Mercury thermometer broke?

I was playing with a mercury thermometer like 2 years ago and it broke and the mercury came out and I started to play with it cause I thought it was cool and I didn't know what it was and I was just playing with it in my hands for like 10 minutes. Would that still be bad for me even though I didn't swallow it?

No, prolonged exposer and/or ingestion are the harmful things you need to be worried about.

if.. and only if. you're sex drive is still intact then there was no permenate damage.

Inhalation of mercury fumes is dangerous as well... The expression 'mad as a hatter' (remember Alice in Wonderland?) is based on this: to prepare the felt that English bowler hats are made of, hatters would dip it in mercury. Over long periods of time, these hatters would inhale so much mercury that it would damage their brain: they'd go mad.

But I really don't think you should be worried about the trace amounts you may have inhaled, once a long time ago!

Hotty: As far as I know, they do no longer put mercury into thermometers anymore. Earlier they probably did it because either they didn't know mercury is bad for you, OR they didn't have a material to effectively replace mercury with. In that last case, they probably figured that knowing one's temperature it's worth the tiny risk of the thermometer breaking in your mouth. In 50 years, who knows, kids may wonder why people were ever exposed to radiation (X-rays) in hospitals...
