Mercury in fish, what are the effects? Am i eating too much? |
I usually eat at least one serving of fish a day, sometimes more. Here's the types of fish i eat. 25yrs old, not thinking about getting pregnant in the near future Okay if you are still developing, or plan to have kids, I would recommend holding off for a while. Mercury can affect the nervous system of a developing fetus or child. The problem is the source; once mercury is present it will never go away. If you are eating canned tuna that might not be good. Salmon that is from the pacific, and not farmed raised is normally very low and mercury and can be consumed. The Atlantic farmed raised salmon got into a lot of trouble with feeding fish parts to the harvest, and if I understand they stopped. I would recommend eating fish no more than once a week if you are a teenager or until you are finished developing. If you have completed your development and are interested in have children, then I would recommend that you not eat it at least twice a week. When you eat fish, stick with the smaller portions of white fish. The smaller portions, because they would be younger and less opportunity for gross contamination. If you are fully developed and you do not plan to have any children, then it is up to you. You are eating too much fish, in my own opinion. Tuna tends to have a high mercury content, but in fairly low doses. I think its best to vary your diet as there is a lot of fish, try substituting it with soya mince, pulses and beans. They can be very tasty and are low in fat. mackeral have quite a high dose, so avoid if poss. during pregnancy oily fish can damadge the babys brain development and could have similar effects on you.
