How long till Mercury poisoning symptoms show up in a person? I am not poisoning people I dropped a candy theremometer with mercury in it. And before anyone says is it red or silver. It was silver. Symptoms of Mercury Poisoning can show in a few hours to days/years. This all depends on what type of exposure we're talking about. Human exposure to metallic mercury can occur from breathing contaminated air, drinking contaminated water, eating food (usually fish containing mercury), and from skin contact. In cases of direct contact, symptoms such as rash can occur almost immediately, while prolonged exposure to smaller amounts doesn't show its effects until years later. That bears some researching.
