How bad is mercury poisoning from tuna?

Around when I was 15-16, I often ate up to 10 cans or more of tuna a week. There was a time when my diet consisted mainly of tuna, so I'd eat a can for lunch, and another for dinner! So am I going to die from mercury poisoning? That was a long time ago, I'm 22 now. I do remember that eating tuna would make me tired and unable to concentrate. I'm just curious as to how bad it is.. since I just found out that tuna has high levels of mercury.

Note that it wasn't tuna sandwiches, it was plain tuna, with nothing added, straight out of the can, with maybe a little bread.

if you get too much mercury in your body it could cause brain damage and and that probably why you were not able to concentrate and were tired. I am not saying you have brain damage but it is just having some small affects. See if you eat tuna on a regular basis it will be quite okay because your mercury level is still low. And everyone does have to have some mercury. Your mercury level is probably not that high. If you keep getting a lot of mercury in your body no matter the way you get it you will be seriously sick. So if you still eat tuna like that try to stop. Eat lesser tuna. And tuna sandwiches contain less tuna and the tuna has lesser mercury even if it was the same amount of as regular tuna so that would be better to eat. It has lesser mercury because that tuna in sandwiches are treated. If you eat tuna when it still a looks like a fish it worst. When it is crushed and and doesn't look like a fish it is better because the mercury level is lower. The stuff that doesn't look like fish is usually put in the sandwiches too.

well when i was about 10 and 11 tuna was all i ate it was tuna sandwichches for breakfast lunch and dinner. so you may not die.lol

i think you would have died by now if you were going to; you'll live

Good question hopfully we will all get a good answer out of this. Personally i think we should worry more about all the growth hormones and steroids etc.. that are in beef, not to mention all the additives in the rest of our food supply. In any case, i still eat tuna but consume much more salmon.

Hope somebody can give a real answer for you/us. Just thinking, maybe it will not harm us but a good gauge to this would be if your kids end up with 3 eyes and two noses.

Not necessarily. While I don't think the oil can be detoxed to get rid of the mercury, it is possible to test it for the heavy metal. If the oil contains mercury, it is not marketed.
