There are certain areas of function in a person's life that effect people who have mental retardation. There are also different degrees of mental retardation.
Typically, a person with it will need help with there daily needs. Such as dressing, bathroom needs, personal hygiene. They are going to have deficits in handling money, learning to read, and understanding road safety .They can have language delays , motor delays, and visual problems.
Many mentally retarded people can be taught life skills. Such as how to cook, go out in public, bus transportation, etc.
The more severely affected the person is, the more they will have challenges in every day functioning.

it depend on the person, on their diagnosis, and on the environment that they are in. Many People with developmental disability's can be very independent in a sheltered, controlled environment, where every thing is exactly where they expect it. Many can preform routine tasks, like shredding paper or assembling cardboard boxes, once they have been coached and know the drill. But in a new situation these same people will have a hard time adjusting.
but this varies immensely from person to person, depending so much on the particular disorder, and even more on the individual, and their personality.
