PKU somehow disrupts the development of the brain or its neural functions, and this manifests as a progressive mental retardation. The retardation is a result of elevated brain levels of phenylalanine, but it isn't entirely clear how this causes the problems.

I agree with dunkosin, offensive! . The only connection between the two is that if PKU is not treated early in life then children can possibly become mentally retarded. BUT thanks to a special low protein diet and metabolic formula this is all preventable.
