What is the definition of mental retardation?

A diagnosis of mental retardation requires that a person's IQ test below 70 points and the person must have dysfunction in at least two areas of adaptive behavior. Adaptive behavior include things like language/communication, social skills, daily living skills etc.
Intelligence is arguably an arbitrary social construct, but the word exists in the medical and school fields to help identify people who need extra help learning and functioning (i.e. adapting). It's equivalent to "slow".

Having an IQ below 70.

Friend - Encarta Dictionary says Mental Retardation is a noun and is defined as "an offensive term for difficulty in learning or in daily functions.

At one time, all learning disabilities and functioning were thrown into this generalized category. Now we know there are many, many forms of learning and functioning disorders from dyslexia to autism. I would call it an archaic term soon to be disassimilated from the language. GBU
