How can I find out if I have a Mental illness or not? |
When I'm around people, I'm really scared and nervous. I hear people insult me saying " that girl is retarded." This has been going on for quite some time now and this concerns me seriously because a lot of people say the same thing over and over again. I spoke to my father about this several times now and he tells me that I don't act like a person with mental retardation. I am twenty years old now and in college. As stupid as this may sound, I feel like people are always evaluating me emotionally not mentally. I really feel sad and angry. I have no idea whether I need to see a psychologist or a doctor to deal with my issue. Any opinions??? You do need to see a psychiatrist, a counselor, or a therapist. It sounds like social anxiety disorder, but I am not a doctor. Just going by personal experience. You can do some research online about social anxiety. you need to talk to a professional. you Can only help your self so much with this but not enough to fully cure you...good luck.. I would go and talk to a counsler at your school or a psycologist. Maybe there is something they can give you or help you work through it. It could be social anxiety. It is very common. My ex-wife is the same way. She can't go anywhere there is a lot of people. If you want help see a doctor. Not sure but just wanted to wish you luck. Any type of mental illness or anxiety is so difficult to go through. Best of luck to you. Good for you to notice that you are unhappy with this situation and that you evaluate yourself " from a distance". It sounds ;ike you have a psychosocial disorder such as anxiett, clusters or depression. You need to have a mental health assessment with your gp. Often things as simple as lifestly can change you. to me it sounds like a common anxiety disorder YES!!!!!!!! see a doctor. Mental retardation IS NOT the same thing as having a mental disorder like depression. You can be helped do things to bost your self esteem also you'll feel better. I agree that you should go and see your gp (local doctor) and hopefully they can refer you to a professional that can help you, even if it is just to reassure you. The fact that you are worried and have some insight into your feelings and emotional state is really positive. You may have an anxiety disorder or something like that but it also sounds as if you have very low self esteem too which obviously isnt being helped by the negative and hurtful comments you have been receiving. Sometimes if people say things often enough we start to believe them. The other thing to realise is that i think one in three of us suffer from mental health problems in some time in our lives and these problems are on a spectrum. Stay strong from natalie x As concerned as you appear to be about this issue , it seems to me time to take some steps to find out if there are any real mental health problems. I would suggest that you start with an appointment with your regular doctor. You need to be very honest and upfront when discussing the extent of your concerns. Your doctor may then recommend that you see a mental health professional. If this is not suggested and you remain worried you may want to take this step yourself.Best of luck ! If you graduated from high school without the label, let alone were accepted in college, then you are not mentally retarded. You should make an appointment to see a psychiatrist (does not mean you are crazy!) she/he can give you some medication if that is what you need to help you feel better. It is good to talk to a counselor also, but they can not prescribe medications. if u r really concerned then ask your doctor for referral 2 some1. So many people r inconsiderate of others feelings. Ignore them. hey chickie=) i would go get help i have this to its called social anxiety disorder see a psychiatrist |
