Accutane and mental health side effects?

I am a 39 year old male and have suffered through acne since my teens. I have very oily skin and all the creams and pills have provided only temporay relief. My new dermatologist recommended that I try Accutane. However, my dermatologist warned me about the side effects of this drug to your mental health such as depression, suicidal thoughts, etc. This concerns me because I had a severe depression back in my teens ( I am okay now), and I have a brother who is suffering from a major depression. I also have other immediate family members and extended family members with other mental health issues. So my question then is am I more susceptible to the mental health side effects of Accutane than a person who does not have any immediate or exteneded family members with mental health issues? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I believe that you are, but would discuss this seriously with your doctor. I would also log onto websites regarding accutane and read their research studies.

I took accutane for 3 months about 4 years ago when I was 20. At the time I was depressed because of the acne and other things. My mom heard about a kid who crashed a plane while on the drug to commit suicide so she freaked. I personally dont recall being any more depressed I was actually probably happier. I have a history of depression also. After taken it my skin cleared up nicely and havent had any major breakouts since so I would suggest you try it since you have had it so long. It definately helps. Oh yeah my sister took it to and shes ok. Good luck

You would likely be more susceptible. I just finished up my treatment about 2 months ago and it was one of the best choices I ever made. Lip dryness was the only problem I encountered. As long as you have a great doctor who keeps up with how you're doing with treatment and any side effects, I think you'll be fine. People tend to remember the rare cases that went bad, instead of the majority positive ones.
Good luck with whatever you decide!

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue taking Accutane.
