Experiences with mental health professionals? |
Just wondering, is it a common experience to seek professional mental health treatment only to find that the people you see are apathetic, unhelpful and basically going through the motions so they can collect their paycheck? yes. That's why you have to be VERY assertive about what you want. I know a lot of people have serious problems when trying to find out exactly what is wrong, but the Dr. should explain what disorder/s they think you might have, why the meds would be good or wouldn't and other options . Keep looking until you find someone who takes you serious , at your first appointment with someone new tell them what you want out of your time with them, what you expect, need , won't tolerate ect and they should do the same. If they aren't willing to try meet your needs and actually try to help, then don't go back. but you also have to be willing to accept to some extent the diagnoisis they give you. I've been fairly lucky with the people i've seen, but had a few bumps on the road too, I wish you the best of luck, just keep trying. How do you know that depression wasn't your primary problem? Are you qualified to make your own diagnosis? No, you aren't. All the possibilities you mentioned - from "ADHD to autism to schizophrenia or any other possibilities" had completely different modalities and completely different treatments. I agree with you doctor(s) that an antidepressant is a significant first step followed by counseling. I know where you're coming from where you think the worst. That's called anxiety with depression. Your doctor made the right call. Now take the medication and hang in there until it starts working. I hope you feel better and you'll be in my thoughts and prayers. Yeah Ive been to see a psychotherapist to talk through some stuff & she ended up being a total nutcase. I think I was more mentally stable than she was. Dont forget, to you its your whole life, to them its just a job. You'll be a lucky person if you can find that one in a million who genuinely cares. |
