Meningitis?

my daughter 13 weeks old was admitted and treated for meningitus on sunday now today they have let her home and said it was just a virus she had signs rash and did not like bright light so was it or not

i am sure the hospital has carried out the relevant tests to determine this.
however if your daughter should experience any other systoms or you are not happy with the way she is in herself. do not hesitate to go straight back to hospital.
good luck i hope it is only a virus. x

are you saying viruses don't cause rashes or sensitivity to light?

somtimes its hard to say but id still watch her like a hawk dont be afraid to bring your daughter back to the hospital if your not happy with her progress,make an apointment with your doctor and talk it through with him/her for your own peace of mind.

I would say that she must be OK if they let her home. (I think you can get a mild form of meningitis)

I hope she hasn't suffered any ill effects, and grows up to be the lovely girl you wish for.

She along with her family are in my thoughts and prayers.

I am really glad she is home.

darling , having nursed and lived through the hell which is meningitis with my own 6 week old son , i can assure you that , categorically NO!!! it was not meningitis , it left my son blind deaf ,retarded and paralised , and he was hospitalised for three weeks and was in isolation special care for two of those

my son had meningitis at 18 days old i thought it was colic and took him to the doctors .he was rushed to hospital were he had a lumber puncture the results were it was meningitis ...he was in hospital for 3 weeks but he was fine i think you daughter has had a virus but they treated her as a precaution for meningitis i hope she is OK and use you motherly instinct if you feel something is not right get it checked out good luck !!!!!!!!!!!

Meningitis takes hold very quickly, usually within hours....If the doctors treated you daughter for this then if she had it or not then she has still been treated, (if you understand)
It doesn't sound like it was meningitis as your daughter is now at home and, i assume, is feeling fine.
It was probably a simple viral infection so you should try and stop worrying.
Just remember, if your still concerned, or your baby shows any signs of a relapse, then get her straight back to the hospitals A & E....use your instincts.

Meningitis means 'inflammation of the meninges'. The meninges are the membranes that cover and protect the brain and spinal cord.
Meningitis can be caused by both viruses and bacteria.
The most severe types of meningitis in children are caused by two types of bacteria: Neisseria Meningitidis (Meningococcus) and Streptococcus Pneumoniae (Pneumococcus). These bacteria also cause septicaemia, which is reponsible for many of the problems people incorrectly attribute to the meningitis. Really, the septicaemia causes all kinds of problems with the kidneys, circulation etc of which meningitis is just a part.

Viruses can cause meningitis but they do not cause septicaemia. So while a viral meningitis can give headache, neck stiffness and photophobia, and can even be associated with a rash that looks a little like a septicaemic rash, it very rarely causes the child to be severely ill or to die.

It sounds like your child presented with signs that were difficult to distinguish from bacterial meningitis and was treated, quite rightly, on a 'just in case' basis. I guess as the night and next day wore on it became apparent that he couldn't be suffering from bacterial meningitis, partly because the tests they did for bacteria came back negative, but also because he responded so well to treatment.

Sorry about the lengthy answer. In short: your child did have meningitis but it was viral.

Hope that helps.

Meningitis is an inflammation of the meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. The inflammation is usually caused by bacteria or viruses (viral meningitis is also called aseptic meningitis). Less common causes include fungi, protozoa, and other parasites.
Bacterial meningitis is less common than viral meningitis but is usually much more serious and can be life-threatening if not treated promptly.
Viral meningitis occurs in people of all ages, although it is more common in children.Viral meningitis is relatively common and far less serious than bacterial meningitis. It often remains undiagnosed because its symptoms are similar to those of the common flu.The majority of cases of viral meningitis resolve with no complications.
first symptoms of meningitis may surface several days after a child has had a cold and runny nose;
;diahroea
;vomiting
;fever;
;Older children may complain of a headache, photophobia (eye sensitivity to light), and a stiff neck, which is often noted by the doctor during a physical exam.
Meningitis also can lead to skin rashes, although rashes caused by bacterial meningitis look different from those caused by viral meningitis. Seizures occasionally accompany meningitis as well
Most cases of viral meningitis resolve completely within 1 to 2 weeks.If meningitis is suspected, the doctor will order laboratory tests to help make the diagnosis. The tests will likely include a lumbar puncture (spinal tap) to collect a sample of spinal fluid. This sample will be examined for signs of inflammation and cultured for the organism that may be causing the infection.
so,with these informations you may now be convinced that it was viral meningitis,which is of a milder form and curable....it also does not leave residual symptoms as bacterial meningitis

did they do an x-ray, to see. A spinal tap is the only way of knowing for sure!!!! My child was diagnosed with mengitis when she was 3 the found nothing in the x-ray to determine that she did but stuck with the diagnoses, she was on IV and meds for days, they never performed a spinal tap!!! they were sure that was what she had THEY WERE WRONG she was misdiagnosed and treated!!! She had a brain tumor. This doesn't mean your child has a brain tumor, a tumor doesn't give you a rash it means no matter how much you like and trust you dr. get a second opinion. Sometimes they won't do certain test think that insurance won't pay and they might not pay, I would rather have an outstanding bill then a child in a coma, which is what happened with me.

you must be worried but i wouldn't if i was you meningitis does take over really quick my son who was 9 days old caught group b strep meningitis and septicaemia if she did have meningitis they would have known straight away i hope this helps if you need more info just email me and i will try and help as i do know alot about meningitis it left my son severely disabled

I would get a second opinion asap. My 4 year old is now disabled from meningitis, she contracted it on her 1st birthday. I was sent home twice from the hospital, by the 3rd visit she had already had a stoke and was partially brain damaged. Please visit meningitis-angels.org for anymore questions. I will be praying for you.
