Meningitis, do you know anyone that has had it? what were some of the after effects like?

My dad is recovering from a bad case of bacterial meningitis, when he was rushed to the emergency room has was very dehydrated from diahria, he was unable to communicate for days, after one week he is now more alert and awake and in less pain. he suffered a stroke mainly due to the meningitis
but he can hear and speak but it seems his memory is pretty iffy. at first he didnt remember who i was this could have been just because of the trauma but when we asked him who i was 5 minutes later, and he was able recall my name, so wither he learned my name all over again or he just needed to be reminded who i was.

Just want to hear what the after effects could be like.

yes, I have had it- 34 years ago (almost died from it)- but now not too many problems, I'm maybe a little more paranoid if I get a stiff neck or a fever, and I can not give blood. other than that I just figure all the crap I have now (like arthritis) is mostly from getting older and playing too hard when I was younger
