According to etymonline.com, it came from the Greek word "menix" or "meningos" meaning "membrane" (especially of the brain). The suffix "-itis" means "disease".

Hi.

The term -itis means inflammatory process.

The term -Meninges is the system of membranes that envelop the central nervous system. The meninges consist of three layers: the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater.
