Meniere's disease?

Anyone have any suggestions for this disease? Maybe have it yourself? There was a recent diagnosis in my family and I'm looking for any help you may have to offer.

Thank you

My best friend has this. A low-sodium diet and celery seed works for her. Celery is a diuretic, which reduces the excess fluid in the ear that causes the dizzy spells. The prescription the doctor gave her was too high a dose, even though it was the lowest dose offered.
Occasionally, she'll start to have one, so when she feels it coming on, she takes meclizine (OTC motion sickness pills, look for a store brand) to nip it in the bud.

M茅ni猫re's (pronounced "men-years") disease is a disorder of the inner ear that affects hearing and balance. It causes sudden attacks of vertigo (a spinning sensation), tinnitus (a loud ringing in the ears), and hearing loss, which may be temporary or permanent.

It may also cause:

Nausea and vomiting that occur with vertigo.
A feeling of pressure or fullness in the ear.
The cause of M茅ni猫re's disease is unknown, although it is probably related to an imbalance of fluids in the inner ear. Treatment includes using medications; avoiding caffeine, alcohol, tobacco, and stress (CATS) to prevent attacks of vertigo; and sometimes surgery to destroy the balance center in the inner ear.

M茅ni猫re's disease is thought to be caused by the accumulation of fluid (endolymph) in the ear. When the fluid builds up, it causes excess pressure. This pressure affects the sensory systems in the inner ear used to maintain balance, which leads to episodes of vertigo.

Sodium "attracts" fluids鈥攊t makes your body retain excess fluid. Thus, eating less sodium may result in less buildup of fluid in the ear and fewer episodes of vertigo. However, eating less sodium does not reduce the intensity or severity of vertigo during episodes.

Try a low-sodium diet... Limiting the sodium in your diet may seem difficult; after all, the typical U.S. diet includes about 4,000 mg of sodium per day. However, if you are aware of the sodium content in foods and avoid high-sodium foods, you will be able to reach a sodium intake of 1,000 mg per day.

Perhaps the major misconception people have when limiting sodium is that the biggest source of sodium in the diet is salt added at the table. This is not true. In general, the biggest source of sodium is processed foods and foods from restaurants. About two-thirds of the sodium in our diet comes from these sources, while salt added at the table accounts for only about 15% of our sodium intake.

BUT... Before you start reducing the sodium in your diet, talk to your health professional. He or she will want to know about any changes you are making to your diet, and may be able to help you.
