Please... nurses, doctors....please read and help if you can....?

I have a question about my mom. She is 55 years old, has Meniere's disease and Fibromyalgia, so she is sick alot of the time as it is. For the past couple of months she has gotten so bad. She has had a headache for well over a month now. When that came about they sent her for a CAT scan, and said the results were normal. But now, they called her and said they wanted to do an emergency MRI. What changed the results to make them do this, I don't know. The past week or so she has been really bad, she hasn't gotten out of bed since Wednesday, she is too weak to, she can't eat at all, she shakes all time, she gets tired out from even just going to the washroom. The doctor called on Friday to say that her MRI is tonight at 7:30 pm, so to get her in that quick just scares me, they must think something is up. I guess I'm not even sure what the difference is between a MRI and CAT scan, or what they would be looking for. I am scared to think of what they might be looking for.
Thank you

Thank you for that, it was honestly hard to read, but thank you. It's just confusing because they said the CT scan was good, everything checked out fine. Guess we will just wait and see...and pray.

A CT scan is very similar to an MRI, they both take a cross sectional kind of Xray of the body. A CT scan however is mainly used for detection of hard tissue (cells with very little water in them), whereas MRI is more useful in detection of soft tissue diagnosis. With your mothers situation I can only assume that on the CT scan they found a tumour (sorry) in the skull region near the auditory canal, and that they are urgently needing an MRI (which is excellent at contrasting a tumour compared to a CT) in order to confirm and/or treat it. however in many cases it is usually benign and not cancerous. hope this helps

It is difficult to be sure as to what the CAT Scan may have shown. Maybe a Neurologist or Radiologist reviewed the report a second time or, maybe your Mom's Doc after reading the report, made a determination to have further testing. An MRI is capable of provided more in-depth results or provides further information that was revealed on her CAT Scan. You have every reason to be concerned since her Doc called and requested an " emergency MRI". I would suggest calling her Doc and ask what's happening. Are you able to receive any of your Mom's medical history ? Are you listed as an emergency contact or did your Mom sign a consent form that allows you to have access to her medical history??? I hope that this helped some and that your Mom's health improves. God Bless! Here's a web on MRI:
