Does Canada's HealthCare System(Medicare NOT to be confused w/US Medicare) pay for medical care in the US?

In other words, if a Canadian citizen became ill while traveling in the U.S., would Canada's Health Care System pay for medical care in the US? The Canadian Medicare (another name for Canadian national health insurance) is for all Canadians, regardless of age while the US Medicare system is mostly for US citizens over the age of 65.

NO

No, you need to still get medical travel insurance. Check with your local travel agent as each country is different, as is each insurance.

I also cannot stress enough... read and fully understand the small print.

The answer for this would vary from Canadian province to province, as health care is a provincial area of jurisdiction. For the province of Alberta, where I live, Alberta covers medical treatment in other jurisdictions only for services offered in Alberta, up to what the cost of that service would be in Alberta. Extra insurance is recommended for anyone travelling out of province.

Yes....and No.

Yes...the health care system will pay for treaments that they pay for in Canada, but only the same amount that they would pay for in Canada (ie, most Canadian hospitals bill flat daily rates no matter what you use, Americans bill for what you use) so the US cost is usually much more then the Canadian....which is the No. The Canadian plan will not pay above and beyond what they would cover.
