Hep B & Measles, mumps, rubella Titers... What is the procedure??

I have called few doctors office & half of them does not know what this means and cannot explain the procedure to me... Can somebody tell me how is titer done to one??? what is the procedure?? I have Hep B vaccination 5 yrs ago, so i need a titer to detect immunity?!?!?! what if im not immune/?? do i get another vaccination?? this is just getting to be costly... my classmate has no insurance like me and she said she paid $900 for all, including doctor's visit, vaccination, titer & booster? Please Help!!! THanks!!

titers are used to check for immunity to diseases that we are commonly vaccinated for. it is done with a blood test. most of the time, if you have had a vaccination, your titer will reflect this (common words on the labs include positive, immune or reactive, etc) and you're set.
sometimes for an unknown reason, you may not be immune to a disease even though you have been vaccinated against it. this is not common, and usually when your titer is indeterminate or negative, they will give you another vaccination. some people stay non-reactive after multiple vaccinations (like multiple heb B series), and should this happen to you, usually documentation of this fact and your hep series should suffice.

see if your local health department can do titers- if anything, you can get cheaper boosters from them if you have to go to a doc for the titers. also see if your student health center can give them for cheap.

dr. jj is correct! If you do not want to spend a lot of money, then simply get the boosters. I believe most of them are free or very low cost at any public health clinic.
To ge a titer, all they need to do is to draw blood. They then send it to a lab that can check for titers... which means that they find out if your body is producing antibodies to a specific disease. They would have to check for each specific disease. The level of your antibodies would be an indicator of your immunity (or lack there of) towards a certain disease.
BTW, Did you have the entire hepB series? one is not enough to insure immunity.
MMR vaccine is inexpensive and usually given as a child. You probably have the record of your vaccine in your health chart.
If you want to save money and be certain that you are immune, the cheapest and most proveable way to do that is to simply get vaccinated over again.
