After a mastectomy...? |
my friends mom just had a mastectomy.. she has this tube or something tied around her waist. just a curious question on what it is.. i dont want to ask her, i might be a bit wierd.. It is probably a drain, that is collecting any blood or fluids. This is quite normal postop and she will have it removed when there is little or no fluid left to collect. they use it to drain the fluids that may collect in the wound. My firend's mom had one and had the same tube in place. Fluids -- especially lymph -- will gather at the site of the removed breast. They'll cause unpleasant swelling if not drained so a drain is left in the incision when it's sewn up and a platic tube connected to a bag to gather whatever drains off. Over a period of a couple of weeks the amount of fluid drops off to almost nothing. |
