Mastectomy patients: Do you ever have both breasts removed when only one is cancerous for cosmaetic reasons? |
Sorry, I meant "cosmetic" reasons. My wife and I were just curious. It seems that having both removed would be less of a hassle in the long term. Do women ever have both removed for convenience sake? I work in a lab and I would like to tell you that it is very common to see both the cancerous breast and the other (contralateral) breast taken off at the same time. A lot of times this is because of the woman's chances to get cancer in that breast (genetic and receptor studies would have been done and shown a higher risk). But if not, it is a personal decision. If she is self-conscious about the difference in size, but never intends to have an implant to replace the breast, then it might be right for her. I'm sure it will be traumatic either way and my personal decision, if I were to get breast cancer, would be to save the healthy breast and get an implant and reconstruction. I have seen this done all in one surgery but it is not recommended and probably under very specific circumstances! |
