When a woman has a mastectomy, is the nipple removed also? |
When a woman has a mastectomy, is the nipple removed also? Yes. If a woman has a mastectomy they remove all breast tissue. My aunt had a double mastectomy and they removed all breast tissue including the nipple to be as sure as possible that they got all the cancer. There are ways that a nipple can be constructed out of other tissue, though. Masactomy operation involves removal of the entire breast either the left or right which has cancer cells in it. So the nipple also gets removed. Based on google images, I think so. Yes, almost always, in order to remove all breast tissue.. Most times, yes, the nipple is removed. Sometimes, a nipple and skin sparing mastectomy is performed but even then, the nipple is usually removed and scraped. A skin sparing mastectomy is the norm nowadays unless a woman is positive that she doesn't want any reconstruction to make a new breast mound. Based on my own experience-yes. |
