a masectomy is hard on any woman.....basically it is losing a piece of yourself that defines you as a woman...maybe she wanted to feel beautiful and womanly even though she was losing a breast.

Women always like to look their best. If she had a masectomy, she must somehow feel like she's loosing a bit of her femenity!Very unfortunate for anyone going through that! Maybe the lipstick makes her feel more beautiful and feminine to compensate for it! Who knows!?

If you read the book it was so that when they went in to operate on her they would see her lip stick and basically think of her as more than just a patient. So they would see her as still being a woman and to know that she thought more of herself than just a breast.
