Does anyone with Marfan Syndrome have a testamonial about pregnancy?

I have marfan syndrome and I have been diagnosed from a very young age.I am married now and we have been struggling with the fact that we might not really be able to have our own children due to certain risks. We are going to see a genetic counselor about our options. I dont know if i want to bring a child into this world and have it go through the same things as I did....but on the other hand, there is a 50 % chance that it will be perfectly fine. I guess I was just wondering if anyone has been through this and if you can give me any insight. I have heard of women doing fine durring pregnancy with little complications. Im not sure if my husband likes the idea of having a "high risk " pregnancy, and i totally understand. We are both considering permanant birth control, but it is a very difficult thing to do. I want to know all the facts and be as educated on my decision as possible. Your input would help us greatly!

This is an extremely personal issue, and I do not envy you at all! Have you contacted the National Marfan Foundation for information?
I also have Marfans (3rd generation), and I decided at a young age not to bear children. Bear in mind I am probably old enough to be your mother!
Yes, there is a 50% chance that any child you have will have Marfans. I am one of 4 children that my mother bore, her aorta dissected during the 4th pregnancy (she survived another 17 years). My decision was based on what I saw my mother go through. Only one of the 4 is not Marfan. My first brother was so badly affected he was still born. My sister has Marfans and she made the same decision as I. She now has 6 step-children. And she will be going through her 2nd aortic surgery in January. My living brother is not a Marfan.
The good news is that the medical field has made some tremendous strides in the past 10-20 years. Even if your child ends up with Marfans there is treatment available to help him/her manage the disorder. Still a lot of normal activities will be out of the question, like basketball & football.
You may have a normal pregnancy with no complications if you are monitored on a regular basis.
One thing that you need to keep in mind is your own well being, physically & mentally. Deciding not to bear children is not an easy chioce for most. One thing you certainly have in your fvor is a supportive spouse! Adoption is always an alternative solution.
Even though I chose not to have children I have still endured 5 aortic surgeries. I remember what I went through as a child whose mother was incapacitated, she had 4 aortic surgeries and of course spent a lot of time in the hospital. That is rough on the child.
Are you currently on medications such as Losartan or beta blockers? Have you had any surgeries?
I am here to help. I am the "owner" of the Marfan Connection support group and am very active in another called Marfans Support and Chat. We have on-line IM conferences several times a week, so if you are interested, please contact me. We wouldwelcome you with open arms!
