Has anyone heard of marfan syndrome and know what it is?

i have it ive just never met anybody else who has and just wandered what life was like for them

Our son's been tested for Marfan's many times, since he has many of the physical indicators. For some time, various specialists were kind of on the fence over whether he might have it, so they explained what his risks were.

The most serious is that for a certain percentage of Marfan's patients, there is a weakness in the aortic artery--the big sucker in the chest. If a weak spot is detected, it can be surgically protected from rupture. If undetected, and if it ruptures, the chances of survival are poor.

Most people with the illness can particpate in some level of recreational sports, although depending on their condition, contact sports or extreme exertion may be counter-advised.

There are also Marfan's-related problems with vision, connective tissue (like tendons and ligaments), the skin, lungs, heart, bones--which may cause problems which are treatable, or may cause no trouble at all.

Marfan's has a hereditary link. Most patients are quite tall and their span from fingertip to fingertip matches or exceeds their height. They tend to have long faces, long hands and feet, long fingers and toes. Having these traits doesn't mean a person has it, just that they should be tested.

Marfan may be transliteration, means troublesome.

I know a girl with it. She leads a pretty normal life. You wouldn't be able to pick her out from anyone else.
