HOw many cases are there of Marfan syndrome? |
HOw many cases are there of Marfan syndrome? Conservative estimate is 60,000 people in the US have Marfans Syndrome. They are telling us that apx 1 in 10,000 have it. But I think that is based on KNOWN cases and many more go undiagnosed until it is too late. You hear about athletes dying of "heart disease", especially basketball players. But they don't bother to tell you what kind of heart disease, it is my belief that 9 out of 10 had a spontaneous aortic dissection. Marfans does not discriminate by sex, race or any other factor. It is pretty equal across the board, male/female, caucasian/people of colour, etc. I am a 3rd gen Marfan. It can be deadly, even with preventive treatment. If you have any questions I could answer, please feel free to contact me. It is a common condition. By far there are no known serious complications arising from it as there is available treatment, such as surgery and braces. It roughly affects more females than males in general, though many cases can be deemed as minor. It's difficult to answer, as Marfan syndrome is diagnosed by mainly by a process of elimination, but must include certain aspects/characteristics common to all known sufferers. |
