Besides maple syrup urine disease, what are some causes of urine that smells sweet like syrup?

my daughter is 2 and occasionally gets this. MSUD is routinely tested with newborn screens, so i know it's not that.

Diabetes mellitis (Type 1, in this case)
In olden days, physicians would take a sip of the patient's urine to see if it tasted sweet.
If you were curious, diabetes comes from the word for 鈥渟iphon,鈥?as people with diabetes urinate like a siphon draining water. Mellitus comes from the word for honey, since people with diabetes mellitus have a sweet smelling (and tasting) urine, from the excess glucose in it. Insipidus comes from insipid, meaning 鈥渓acking flavor or zest; not tasty,鈥?since diabetes insipidus has non-sweet urine. Diabetes insipidus (DI) is an uncommon condition that occurs when the kidneys are unable to conserve water as they perform their function of filtering blood.

wow i think u've got a problem if thats happening

Well, with diabetes there is a lot of sugar in the urine. That would be my first thought. She should get checked by a doctor.

edit: d'oh, was beaten to it while getting links.
