Manic Depressive Illness..Anyone have this?

I may have it, but I am not sure? I have symtoms of it according to my doctor.. What medications are available, and does the medication help you to live a more controlled lifestyle? Anyone with any imformation, please feel free to respond. Whether you have it or you know someone who does. Thanks for all your time!!

Yes, I am Manic Depressive, also known as Bipolar. I also suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder); OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder); and DID (Dissociative Identity Disorder).

For me personally, I absolutely could not function without the help of medication and counseling. I was first diagnosed just a few years ago. But I know realize that this is something that I have lived with for almost my entire life.

Taking medication can be very frustrating and it can take a long time to find out what the correct medication(s) for someone to take.

medication is something you'll have to work through according to your body chemistry. it may take some time for you to find what works for you, but whatever you do don't stop taking your meds when you feel better.
you may also want to look for information on bi-polar disorder. good luck and be well.

Reading recently Manic Depression has been incorporated with Bipolar Disease.
I was diagnosed as Manic years ago. Started of elavil then added prozac. 2 years later I had a break down on the meds.
I have been med free for 16 years.
I eat Happy foods--- chicken, turkey and fish and lots and lots of veggies.
I take High stress vitamin B complex, L-tyrosine and letchin twice a day.

Oh!!! I Do Not Use Bleach. It causes depression !!!

Manic Depressive illness, your meaning BiPolar right? I suffer from Bipolar and it took me years to get a proper diagnosis so I was on anti depressants for my depression, but as your doctor has probably told you a bipolar person can not be on antidepressants as it will make them manic, so when i took anti depressants they made me manic which wasnt any fun, please make sure your doctor does not give you anti depressants for this. The medications that are mostly given out for bipolar patients are atypical anti psychotics (dont be scared of the name) and typical anti psychotics.
Typical Anti Psychotics are:
Chlorpramazine (Thorazine)
Fluphenazine (Prolixin)
Perphenazine (Trilafon)
Prochlorperazine (Compazine)
Thioridazine (Mellaril)
Trifluoperazine (Stelazine)
Mesoridazine
Promazine
Triflupromazine (Vesprin)
Levomepromazine (Nozinan)

Thioxanthenes:

Chlorprothixene
Flupenthixol (Depixol and Fluanxol)
Thiothixene (Navane)
Zuclopenthixol (Clopixol and Acuphase)

Butyrophenones:

Haloperidol (Haldol) - Available in decanoate (long acting) form
Droperidol
Pimozide (Orap) - Used to treat Tourette syndrome
Melperone

Atypical Anti Pyschotics are:
Clozaril
Zyprexa (commonly used)
Risperdal
Seroquel
Geodon
Solian
Invega
Abilify

I am on Seroquel which has worked wonders for me but it does make you a little drowsy at the start of taking it,so its best to take before bed. My partner is on Zyprexa which has also worked wonders for him, but again has drowsiness at the start, but most of them do.

The medication does help you live a more controlled life style, it controls your mania and depression and any other symptoms you may have making day to day life a lot easier. So once your doctor decides which one he would like to put you on do a little research on it first so you are well aware of any possible side effects!
Good Luck with your treatment.. hope ive helped a bit!

I was diagnosed as bipolar (same thing, but currently more widely used term) a few years ago. It can range from mild to severe, and take many forms. But there ARE some good medications out there now that can help you live a normal, or nearly normal, life. Some are for depression, some for panic attacks/disorder, and some for general mood regulation. There are a number of drugs that have been used for many years as anti-seizure medications, which are now being prescribed and working well for people with bipolar disorder. My meds include Zoloft, Klonopin, Lamictal and Remeron, but there are many others. More than likely, IF you're diagnosed as bipolar, you will have to go through a period of trying different things and at varying dosages for a few weeks at a time to see how they work for you. Rarely does someone get the perfect combination or dose right off the bat, and your meds will need to be carefully managed by a psychiatrist. 'Talk' therapy and something like DBT is also VERY helpful and advised. My advice to you as a fellow sufferer, is to act quickly, be compliant, and read up on your condition and meds as much as possible. Good luck to you!

My brother has bi-polar disorder which was chemically induced, due to his drug use. There are many symptoms:
Impulsively
--Mood changes or mood swings
--Broken thought patterns
--Seemingly never tired for days then sleeps for days
--Goes "manic" (does things like disappears for days ad calls friends he hasn't spoken with in years at like 2 am.
--Paranoid
Go to WebMd for more. He's had a horrible time with medications. If you even think you have any side effects from them then you need to talk to your doctor. If you have this condition, you will know it! People may joke about it and some teens have these symptoms and are just fine. See several PSYCHIATRISTS before you accept a diagnosis. Once you get on the roller coaster of medicines, it's very hard to get back to normal.
