Will my child inherit my bipolar disorder? |
I am a diagnosed Manic-Depressive. I have Bipolar 1 disorder. My girlfriend and I are expecting a child very soon. My question is, would my illness be passed on to our child? Not that is going to stop us, but I just want to know if my child will have a high chance of being manic-depressive? Check this link out. Looked like it may be useful. I think you can pass it down but if you're girlfriend isn't bipolar there isn't a large chance...but read the article...I didn't get all the way through it. Genetically yes, and the behavior will be learned if you display the behavior as part of everyday life. Kids do what their parents do... :) Take your meds and be healthy for the little guy's sake. Your child will have a shot at it, though I don't know the exact odds. I'd say they were 50-50. No. there is no such as the actual illness being passed on to your child. What you do pass is a potential predisposition to the illness. All this means is that your child is more predisposed to having the illness than someone who has no bipolar illness among their own parents. It all depends. It's a gene just like hair color or eye color. It might or might not be passed to your kid. If they're going to be a lot like you then it's possible. Even if they aren't a whole lot like you it still is something that might happen. there is very much so genetic links with bipolar disorder. but Stop worrying your self so much. Its not a for sure thing and it just means there is a higher risk to children of bipolar parents. I have bipolar and so far only one of my children show any signs of bipolar disorder and even then that child has gone through a lot of traumatic events that have caused some of her mood problems. I have 3 other children that show no signs what so ever of having bipolar. you need to relax about it and if the child ever shows signs deal with it then. remember some if not a lot of behaviors that us bipolar people show are normal in children. |
