What are the qualifications to gain disablilty for mental illness?

My daughter is 18 but unable to work. She is Bipolar, Manic depressive, OCD, and has panic disorder. How can I find information on possibly putting her on disability?

She might qualify for SSI, Supplemental Security Income. She (or you) can call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 to make an appointment to file the application. An appointment, either in office or over the telephone will be made with your nearest branch office.

SSI is a needs based program for persons with little or no income. In addition to meeting the disability requirements (the condition must be expected to last at least 1 year), any income coming into the household can affect her eligibility. There are exclusions such as whether or not you own or rent the home, 1 vehicle.

If the income limits are met, she will be asked (or you can do it for her) complete a questionnaire on her disabling condition. You'll also be asked to sign medical information release forms. This is so that SSA can gather medical information from hospitals and doctors. After gathering all of the information, it will be sent to a local Disability Determination Service (DDS). That's a group of doctors in your area that will decide whether or not your daughter is disabled according to SSA rules.

Their decision can take up to 120 days.
