What does managed care consist of?

I think you mean when dealing with insurance companies. Basically managed care companies, at least in the mental health field, are used by insurance companies to save money. They will require that you receive preauthorization before going to the doctor or receiving certain services- making sure that services are medically necessary. They also contract with providers to accept only a certain amount as payment to save money for the individual and the insurance company. So if you are looking to use a certain provider, you may need to make sure they are in the managed care network as well.

If you call your insurance company and inquire about what service you need, they should tell you if you need to contact a managed care company or have service preauthorized.
