What obligation do doctors, social services, police and adult mental health care have? |
My mum is struggling to manage her affairs. I have just visited her and through a silly mistake she has recently incurred over one thousand pounds in bank charges. She was unable to buy any food for three weeks. She lives in wales is very independent but not coping. I have found a short term solution to her financial difficulties but need to understand what support is avaialable to her. I asked the police to visit her and they wrote a report to social services who said that she had to self refer. I have managed to get her to do that via a phone call. Has anyone any suggestions that may help solve this nightmare. My ideal would be that she moved to the area I live in and moved into sheltered housing. My brother is not available to help and I am exhausted with the worry of all this Mum is 68, she had a stroke at 39 which left her slightly impaired - diagnosied with paranoid schizophrenia twenty years ago. Dad died four years ago - he was able to contain my mum's impulsive spending. Mum moved to mid wales without telling myself or my brother - There is no hidden agenda behind this just stress and concern A meeting between you your mum and her gp should get the ball rolling, her gp will make suggestions to you both and tell you who to contact. I had a similar problem and even after the initial meeting I had to make several more phone calls and keep constantly on her back. The police have no legal obligation to keep checking on your mum but if its occasional and you are worried they will of course check in on your mum. Social services do have an obligation of care to your mum as soon as they are notified, so now your mum has self refered thingd should start happening fairly quick, but keep on their backs. OK first is your mum working if not and not fit for work she should be getting DLA and a lot of other stuff that comes hand in hand with that (if you need help on that side of things please let me know) As for the banks if you have been watching TV of late you will have seen that a lot of these charges are against the financial regulations and so she might have a good case for getting them fees back. An adult social worker should be able to find places that can help her with food and such things like that. And if she is on DLA she is classed down as disabled and so they are not allowed by law to leave a person who is disabled with out electric or gas etc etc. Also once you get things going you can get her into a support accommodation that has flats altogether but also has an area in the building that is communal and has cares to help. good luck take care From experience nobody has any obligation except You or your Mum. She can go into a care home, sheltered Housing or have social services at home.....but It will all have to be paid for eventually either by your Mother, her Estate or her Family. no immediate solutions but go to the law of your land to find answers to you question! We are in a civilised society ( world ) and answers to such must exist-if only you are not kidding with hidden agendas behind the question!Further no need to worry-is not each responsible for his /her own problems? I don't know how old your Mother is, but you can help her change her attitudes if you can get her to change her diet. It is NEVER too late to begin on the road to good health. Have her stop eating red meats, no junk foods or chocolates, no sodas, start her eating more fresh vegetables, more fresh fruits and organic fruit juices. Have her drink 6 to 8 bottles of pure water every day. Have her or help her start to walk at least two miles every day. At the end of thirty days this is what will happen, she will have more energy, more stamina, more vitality and more mental acuity than ever before in her life. It is never too late to start on the road to a healthier lifestyle unless one never attempts to start. I have been doing this for the last twelve years and feel wonderful. I am almost 60 and look a lot younger. Do this, it is cheaper and healthier than doctor's who only want your money. |
