Breast lump cancerous?

Hi all, my cousin has benign at her breast, and her dr did USG as well as mammography

The USG result was showing the benign increased from one to three in 6 months duration, but the mammography result are fine.

What's the difference between those two (USG & Mammography)? Which one conclude better? What's the latest capability of Mammography?

Someone said if the benign is pain, it tends not to be cancerous, and vice versa if it is not pain. Is it true / partially true?

Thanks & regards.

Mammography can show both cancerous and benign breast masses, but some masses will not be seen at all. Mammos can also show microcalcifications (some are benign and some are malignant). Sometimes, microcalcifications are the ONLY sign of a breast cancer. Mammography has limitations in younger, denser breasts. Those breasts appear white on film, and all signs of breast cancer on mammos also appear white. The white tissue hides the white pathology. Mammography is not perfect, but it is the best thing we have for mass screening right now. MRI is very good, but very expensive and not as widely available, therefore, it is not a good screening method.

Ultrasound is also very good for breast masses, but cannot visualize microcalcifications (that is why we don't do just u/s and not a mammo). A simple cyst is very easily diagnosed with u/s. A cyst is never cancer and never changes into cancer. U/s can also show other masses (benign: fibroadenoma or simple encapsulated fat OR cancerous masses).

Painful vs. non-painful masses: Most cancerous tumors in the breast are not painful, BUT NOT ALL! Cysts tend to be tender, especially when they get large and the pressue within the fluid filled sac grows. Do not EVER let a painful lump make you think it is fine. I have seen patients with painful lumps which turned out to be malignant.

Anyhow, it sounds like her doctor is on top of things. Good luck to you both.....

They're two different types of tests, but both are valid,

Pain or the lack of pain is meaningless here.

There are still more diagnostic tests to do, and until then, there are no further answers to be had.
