Is high CEA (carcinoembriyonic antigen)suggestive of malignancy ?

One of my friend had moderately high CEA levels (47 mg/dL; the upper normal of the laboratory is 27) without any symptom and/or sign; but his gamma glutamyl transaminase levels are also high and perhaps he has steatosis. I need expert opinion

CEA is only a tumor marker for cancer of liver. That means the individual may/may not develop liver cancer.Periodic chek up,giving up alcohol, and high carbohydrate diet are recommended.False negative high levels occur in chronic alcoholics, and severe uncontroled diabetics. It is a blessing in disguise as the individual if at all gets malignancy of liver gets the earliest diagnosis and curative treatment.

Are you sure you're talking about CEA level??? The upper limit of normal of CEA is 2.5 for non-smokers, and 5.0 for smokers. Maybe it is difference in lab techniques, but I have seen these from different labs, and those are usually the values.

Also, high CEA in absence of histologically proven cancer is not useful information. Why did they draw it in the first place?? It is a tumor marker for several different kinds of cancers, but most often colon cancer. It is most useful in tracking a trend i.e., does it go up month to month or stay the same.
