Is anyone familiar with this disease, treatment, and prognosis?

My friend had surgery on her thyroid and the doctors had to remove a follicular tumor. She was in the unfortunate 20% category that showed a malignancy.

The treatment for follicular cancer of the thyroid depends upon the "stage" (the extent) of the cancer when it is diagnosed. Has it spread beyond the thyroid to the lymph nodes? Has it spread into the surrounding tissues? Has it spread to distant organs (most commonly the bones)?
Another feature of follicular carcinoma of the thyroid is whether or not it depends upon "thyroid stimulating hormone" (a substance produced by the pituitary gland) for its growth. If tests show that it does, then the treatment for the patient must include lifelong treatment with thyroid hormone replacement, so that their pituitary does not make any thyroid stiumlating hormone.
Follicular carcinoma of the thyroid that is confined to the gland itself, with no extension to the lymph nodes, surrounding tissues or distant organs, has an excellent prognosis - about 90% of patients have normal survival. Even if the cancer has extended, there are treatments (radiation therapy, radioactive iodine, chemotherapy) that can extend useful survival, and even cures.
I hope that your friend does well.
