age:66 sex:F
sugical pathlogy report
speciman:colonic biopsy,sigmoid area
clin.data:abnormal colonic mucosa.R/O malignancy
microscopic:all of the fragments are partly or completely replaced by adenomatous halnds with severe atypia.one of the fragments show few adenomatous grands along the bundles of muscularis mucosa, not excuding invation.typical desmoplastic reaction was not seen.
diagnosis:colonic biopsy,sigmoid area:
adenomatous changes to colonic mucosa with severe atypia see comment.
comment:stromal invasion cannot be excluded with certainty.examination of the entire lesion is recommended.

Im not sure what they specifically mean when they say severe atypia, but the word atypia means that the area is not normal looking when the surgeon saw it- maybe some cells have grown more than they expected or something like that.

The surgeon did say "abnormal colonic mucosa.R/O malignancy", which just means that the mucus, or jelly-like lining the colon ,(part of the lower intestine) is abnormal, the cells may be overgrown in one area or something, but "r/o malignancy" is a great thing to see- It means that the surgeon is ruling out the possibility of a malignant cells which are cancerous.

Please make sure to ask the doctor or surgeon exactly when is meant by this . I am a senior nursing student, not a doctor.

It would appear that you had a colonoscopy and they removed a polyp. This polyp demonstrates hyperplasia and microscopic evidence of atypia. There is no evidence of frank cancer, but you should follow-up with your surgeon or gastroenterologist for surveillance colonoscopy in 6-12 months.
