Male menopause?

40 years old and having the syptoms of andropause.... has anyone tried hormone therapy for men.... if so what kind of results did you have

is there such a thing AS male menopause??!

Don't mess around with hormones unless you are under the direct supervision of a qualified physician.

Hormone replacement is very controversial. Testosterone therapy, for instance, is highly questionable in that it can affect different men in different ways. Men have different tolerances to artificially increased amounts.

Avoid taking over-the-counter and unregulated supplements that offer relief of middle-age maladies. Melatonin is often recommended in some health magazines for insomnia. But, there are side effects (nightmares, sweating, sleepwalking, and acting out during dreams, etc.) that some people have. Also, very few studies have been done and long-term effects are simply not known.

You don't say what your "symptoms" are, and the reality of "andropause" is debatable. There's no doubt that men's egos get challenged by widening 'love handles' and beer-guts, and there can be sudden drops - or even increases - in male hormone levels, but men do not have the same type of changes that women have, leaving andropause more in the realm of hypothesis.

Regular physical checkups are essential after 40, especially if you are having "symptoms". Be sure to get a colonoscopy as soon as the doctor tells you to, and have prostate check ups and blood tests (prostate antigen specific - PSA) for possible prostate cancer.
