This may be a silly question, can malaria be passed down to future children?

My fiance went to Senegal, Africa last August and came down with malaria, I have read that malaria although treated stays with you for the rest of your life. I am now almost 9 wks pregnant and I was wondering if the baby would have a risk of having malaria.

Hi,
I live in Ghana, W Africa, and I know this can be a great source of fear. No, your baby is safe. Babiescan't be born with malaria, they only suffer if the mother has malaria. Malaria can't be sexually transmitted anyway, so no chance. I would really recheck that info about malaria staying with you the rest of your life. People here get it everyday, and once they get the correct treatment, they go about their everyday lives normally. They can't get it again if they have not been exposed to mosquito bites. I hope this helps to put your mind at rest. Take good care of that baby, they are little angels sent from heaven to put smiles on the faces of all around them. I can't wait to have my own little bundle of joy!!

it's not a silly question. i'm glad you're concerned. malaria will not be transmitted to your child AS LONG AS you do not contract malaria yourself. if you do have malaria, you will risk miscarriage.

there are some medicines you can take if you do contract malaria while pregnant. It is safe to use Chloroquin and Paludrine in pregnancy, even in the first three months of pregnancy. Mefloquin and Doxycycline must not be used in pregnancy. ask your doctor for more information!

hope this helps!
