Malaria is a protozoan infection (Plasmodium vivax, P. falciparum, P. malariae, and P. ovale)characterized by paroxysms of chills, fever, and sweating, and my anemia, splenomegaly, and a chronic relapsing course. All four parasites multiply within the RBCs. P. vivax and P. ovale may persist in the liver. After prolonged untreated malarial infection or repeated relapses, persistent hepatosplenomegaly develops. In fatal falciparum malaria, there are often puctate hemorrhages scattered throughout the brain as a result of capillary occlusion with parasite-infected RBCs.

Treatment, depending on the infection, could be quinine sulfate, tetracycline, pyrimethamine-sulfadoxine, quidindine gluconate IV, chloroquine, and primaquine phosphate. Alternative medicine would look to supporting the liver and spleen (and RBCs) while boosting the immune system to fight the infection.
